Shona Retreats

Eilean Shona is a stunning private island off the West Coast of Scotland with no cars, a small community and in the midst of breathtakingly beautiful wilderness. The perfect place to retreat and re-charge batteries, learn new skills or practice old ones, spend time alone or with new friends.

Our creative courses, led by experienced teachers, will focus on exploring creativity in this unique island setting - cut off from the world and all its stresses, immersed in nature and surrounded by wildlife.  Retreats are aimed at both the beginner and those with more experience.

Writing Retreat with Freya North, 16 - 22 September 2019

Led by bestselling novelist, Freya North, the writing retreat will combine sessions on character development, researching a novel and how to get published, with creative writing exercises and personal time to concentrate on your own work. Freya will also offer one-to-one time, where she will give individual feedback and advice on your writing. Please register your interest in the course by emailing here.

Freya North is the best-selling author of 14 novels which have been translated into many languages. She gave up a PhD to write fiction and her first novel Sally was published in 1996 to great acclaim.  The winner of the Romantic Novel of the Year Award (for Pillow Talk) Freya's much-loved and commercially successful novels can be best described as ‘domestic drama’ for their focus on families, love, lust and loss - and strong female leads.  A passionate reader since childhood, in 2012 she set up the Hertford Children’s Book Festival and she judged the 2018 Costa Book Awards.  Freya is also an Ambassador for Beating Bowel Cancer and for Cecil's Horse Sanctuary and she organises long-distance fundraising cycle rides.   Born in London, she now lives in the Hertfordshire countryside with 3 horses, 2 dogs, 5 sheep  and 2 teenagers.  Currently, Freya is working on screenplays and her 15th novel.  She likes to cite Robert Frost: "No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader."
